Vipassana Meditation Retreat with Venerable Sujiva

This is a rare opportunity, when Venerable Sujiva ( visits Canada first time and leads a Vipassana Meditation Retreat in Vancouver.

This non-residential retreat will be held September 9th–11th, starting the evening of Friday, September 9, and finishing in the afternoon of Sunday, September 11.

About the Retreat Teacher


Venerable Sujiva is a Theravadin Buddhist monk who has devoted his early years to the practice and teaching of vipassana meditation in Malaysia. He is also respected by his students for his compassion and deep understanding of the Buddhist teachings.

As a layman, he studied Buddhism and meditation under the Venerable Paik Wan, a Chinese Chan master. During his monastic training, he practised under the Venerable Phra kru Dhammapalanana Thera who founded the Malaysian Buddhist Meditation Centre in Penang, Malaysia. During this period, he also practised under Thai teachers of the forest such as Ajharn Phet a Thai forest teacher at the Thai border with Malaysia. Later he went to the Mahasi Centre in Yangon, Burma and practised under Ovadacariya U Javanabivamsa and the under Ovadacariya U Panditavamsa where he learnt both Samatha and Vipassana technques.

Returning to Malaysia, he set up the Santisukharama Meditation Centre, Kota tinggi,Johor, Malaysia in 1982 where he resided and taught for 15 years, holding countless retreats.

Another milestone in the development of the teaching of Vipassana meditation occured in 1996 where he began conducting retreats abroad starting with Australia. Since then he has held retreats in Hong Kong, Neew Zealand, United States, Czech and Slovak republics, Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland and Italy. In recent years, he had been going also to Netherlands and Germany. He is now based in Pian dei Ciliegi Meditation Centre in Northern Italy.

The venerable has also authored a number of books on Meditation, the most recent being " The tree of wisdom, the river of no return", as well as several books on Buddhist poetry.

8:00pm–8:30pm – Guided meditation on arousing and experiencing directly the qualities inherent in mindfulness

8:30pm–9:00pm – Discussion, questions + answers


9:00am–10:00am – Sitting meditation instructions as guided meditation

10:00am–11:00am – Walking meditation instructions and practice

11:00am–12:00pm – Sitting meditation

12:00pm–1:30pm – Lunch

1:30pm–2:30 – Briefing on body foundation of mindfulness with questions + answers and discussion

2:30pm–3:00pm – Walking meditation and further instructions on walking

3:00pm–4:00pm – Sitting meditation

4:00pm–5:00pm – Briefing on Mindfulness of feelings and discussion


9:00am–10:00am – Sitting meditation; further guidance and instructions

10:ooam–10:30am – Walking meditation and further instructions

10:30am–11:30am – Sitting meditation

11:30am–12:00pm – Mindfulness of Consciousness and Questions and Answers

12:00pm–1:30pm – Lunch

1:30pm–2:00pm – Walking meditation and instructions

3:00pm–4:00pm – Mindfulness of Consciousness and essentials of Insight meditation and 3 universal characteristics


1. The Practice of Loving Kindness meditation can be introduced depending on time available.

2. Discussions and Questions + Answers are replacing individual interviews but can be available on request depending on time available.
