Secrets of the Ashtanga Yoga System

Secrets of the Ashtanga Yoga System

In conjunction with Babylon Yoga, we are excited to welcome Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor to our Sunday Speakers series for a two-day (three-workshop) event. Join us Friday, November 28th for a Talk on the Empty Mind, followed by two days of workshops held Saturday, November 29th and Sunday, November 30th. Be sure to sign up ahead of time (via Babylon Yoga's website) to reserve your spot.

Rhythm, exquisite detail, and meditative alignment make the Ashtanga system really work right from the very beginning. In this Workshop we will explore the basics of internal breathing, the energy connections in the core of the body and the subtle movements that compose the Ashtanga system. We will work with postures from the Primary Series, stringing them together on the thread of the breath as a means of deepening and enriching the practice so it evolves naturally into a mediative form. We will also explore the important, yet sometimes elusive finishing sequence; back bending, shoulder stand and headstand as they inform whole-body patterns of movement and awareness that prepare us for an introduction to pranayama.

Friday, November 28 6:30pm

While practicing yoga we soon discover that Prana (internal breath) and Citta (mind) are two ends of the same stick. This eventually allows us to feel our yoga stretches, sensations–patterns and feelings--extend to infinity. But what about our beliefs, hopes, opinions, and philosophies about ourselves, our world and our yoga? Do they stretch out to infinity in the same delightful way as our internal Prana? This talk will look at ideas about yoga, its many practices, its many philosophies, the patterns they make, what matters and who really cares.

Weekend Workshop #1

Saturday, November 29 9:30am–12:30pm

Vinyasa: It's Methodology, Forms and Foundation

When postures are strung together like jewels on a thread through the internal forms of practice, we are able to perceive whatever is arising and adjust our movements, postures and even our preconceptions accordingly. In this rigorous yet meditative class we will work with Surya Namaskara, standing postures and patterns within the Primary Series to explore the relationship of prana to apana, and the joining together of subtle movements of body and mind so that meditation automatically arises, bringing the Ashtanga Vinyasa system to life.

Weekend Workshop #2

Saturday, November 29 2:30pm–5:00pm

Backbends, Finishing Postures and Pranayama

An exploration of the whole body patterns found in back bending and that lead to safe and comfortable finishing postures with emphasis on the little details which eliminate joint compression, straining and a sense of urgency that can sabotage the important "cooling down" phase of our practice or can cause injury. We will finish the class with introductory pranayama practices that can be used daily to complete the form.

Weekend Workshop #3

Sunday, November 30th 9:30am–12:30pm

Detailing the Primary Series

An intricate exploration of the Primary Series of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, with close attention to meditative quality of form and movement. The universal form of internally integrated yoga postures will be experienced as a continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements. Fine detailed attention to subtle technique will prove to be the way of avoiding injury and integrating obstacles.
